I think that you might do better to read up on the characteristics of each fund on Rakuten's iDeCo offerings page. This gets you detailed info on each fund if you click on the hyperlinked blue fund name text. It seems you don't need to be logged in to access the info.

Thanks everyone, your responses are helpful. I'm reading up on them now. After I make my selections and get my Rakuten account approved, the next thing I plan to do is raise my contribution from 12,000 yen to 20,000 yen. I'm hoping Rakuten still allows one to do this on their web portal without having to submit any forms and wait for a long period of time.

Best regards!

I think that you can request an increase in your contribution to 20,000 yen monthly at this login.

We did that once for Mrs Head. I think it was just a request, and that a paper confirmation form was still needed. But this was 3 or 4 years ago, and the rules may have changed now.

Related obstacle for iDeCo: I checked my payments recently for 2024 and noticed that I had only paid 11 months rather than the 12 months Mrs Head put in.
I changed allocation during the year, at the wrong time it seems, so I lost one installment of 23,000yen. Not the end of the world, but a bit annoying.
Reminder to myself and anyone else reading: don't mess about too much with iDeCo. Set and forget, as much as possible.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.
