My in laws live down the road and we renovated their house for them a few years ago. We help them out a bit day to day but I would not consider living with them. I think I would last about three days

But family is family. You probably would want to help him out in some way. We are going through a similar situation with my husband's sister. She never married and now has dementia, so we are trying to help her out monthly with her senior care bills, but not claiming her as a dependent. (she lives apart). It's just my feeling that in the long run, it is better to not have an adult as a dependent, so then the city would have pay a more for a low income person. Maybe you could help him find a hobby. Years ago we made my father in law sign up for local gateball team and he did like it, although he was quite competitive and complained about the poor playing skills of the other players...

I like your approach, the kindness goes a long way.

Generally if someone is bad with money, handing them more money is not the solution. I still say getting someone utilities on auto-pay, helping with grocery shopping, making sure their rent is deducted, makes the most sense.

The if they spend down their monthly income, you don't need to worry. This method does not rely on expecting someone to change in their later years.
