How many really big companies focus only on the domestic market anyways? I guess some internet companies like DeNa? Even Rakuten and Mercari are trying to break into the global space.

That strategy would force you to invest in small companies that only service Japan which would suffer immensely if something caused their business to drop and they had no diversification.

Yeah, some of the stocks he buys are bus companies and railway companies :shock: Not sure what else. He lost a lot on airlines in the past so doesn't bother with them. Actually it's more of a hobby for him and he retired early-ish (59) just a few months ago. He had a successful local business and seems well off. His monthly income is now from rental property and the sale of his business.
