Does the credit card have to belong to the account owner?
My wife has SBI and Prestia accounts, but I am not sure if she can get a credit card without a steady income.
I have a Rakuten card but I guess I am SOL. No joy using US-based cards either, right?

The credit card has to match exactly with the name of the account so yes.

SBI =>I had this issue. I sent a message through the SBI website (using Deep-L I admit).
They replied, simply saying they fixed the issue on their side and it worked.
(SBI account with Gold NL SMBC card).
Rakuten => Went through Rakuten card, and they talked to Shoken.
Monex => Aplus would not issue me a card so I do not use that account.

- Is the middlename missing on the backend and not just on the card? You can check your credit card bill
- Yes, as long as you've connected your bank account to your brokerage account, its trivial to do this.

If the issue is for Rakuten Card, then you can call a Rakuten Card agent and tell them the issue and they will fix it (they will call Rakuten Shoken internally to get both names matching). Usually it will be fixed in one day and you can try to use the card for the Tsumitate from the next day after calling them.
You can follow my small tutorial in this thread:
https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewt ... 6356#p6356
I did it back in 2020, but had to do exactly the same thing again a couple of months ago, as my credit card expired and the procedure of names matching needs to be redone. Fortunately, I followed up what I wrote 4 years ago, even with the same contact phone numbers.
Good luck with it!

thanks all. unfortunately this is a longstanding issue.. 山銀 bank account was made when middle name was not necessary..cannot be changed without paying 3万。。therefore have not done it..the credit card is linked to this so in the same name... the sbi, monex accounts i have are under new rules so with middle name.bank account cannot just be closed and reopened as linked to house loan.. pain in the arse.. therefore cannot do auto transfers to sbi etc for free ..

You should just open an SBI bank account and get a SMBC card. It doesn't really hurt to have multiple bank accounts. Just transfer 50k a month to it to pay off the CC.
