I live in the mountains (moved out of Tokyo during COVID) and weeks like this really make me glad I did. Unfortunately I have to go into the city today for meetings and, frankly, I am dreading it. I often wonder at what point a city like Tokyo becomes unlivable? Air conditioning makes anywhere livable up to a certain point but what happens if we go through another energy crisis and we start getting daytime black outs or brown outs. It will be horrific. I think anyone who is considering retiring in Japan should be thinking hard on this topic and choose a location (in the mountains; near the sea; further north) where they know they can ride out higher temperatures in the future.

One reason I am planning to get solar panels and batteries for our place once we move to a house.

Just a suspicion, but in the summer heat I think my mileage goes down--some of the gas may be evaporating?
Looks like our building a carport had an extra benefit!

Ours are going full steam now.
Our electric bill dropped from ¥13,000 to ¥2,000, plus we are collecting up to ¥8,000 a month for selling back to grid.
