I think that US citizens cannot open accounts at Japanese brokers. That's the case, right? So I think that Rakuten, SBI and Money are probably not available to me.

If it's not too much trouble, could you post the current rates for USD T-bonds, MMF, and Time deposits at these institutions? I'm wondering what I'm missing out on. (If anything)

Americans can indeed open accounts, and they can trade Japanese equities. I am not certain about bonds though.

As for current rates, I am sure you can Google those yourself. Monex, Rakuten and SBi for exchanges. Shinsei, Sony, SMBC and the like for Time deposits.

They've bumped it up to 4.7% (US$ only)

It's very easy to buy if you have a Prestia account. Especially if you already have US$ in a US$ account. Though converting yen to $ is less painful than it has been recently.
