This is sort of what I was getting at when I asked whether the employer wanted OP to contribute more than usual.

I just read this for the first time from the Jetro link posted above, anyone knows how it works/ever used it? Do we only need to send foreign medical receipts to our work insurance company or the city hall NHI section?
I always thought medical expenses incurred abroad would never been taken into account in Japan… My fault for never looking into it ><

If an insured party incurs medical treatment expenses at a medical institution while staying or traveling overseas, he/she can apply to be reimbursed after returning to Japan. The amount of medical expenses incurred overseas is converted into a comparable amount of Japanese medical expenses, and 70% of that amount is reimbursed.
