Just to confirm: you can use cash from your bank account or broker account to buy investments, you certainly don't need to use a credit card.

May I ask what the benefits of these point systems might be. Again, complete novice here so I don’t know much but is it like cash back / extra money to invest? I’m not sure how it works
Here is the Monex one. 1.1% back in points that can be used on Monex to reduce some fees, or changed into T-points or other electronic money.

Getting the SBI credit card is probably the simplest option, I think. I believe they do something similar to Monex.
Thanks for the link. I passed it on to him but he still seems attracted to Rakuten. Says it looks easier
Sounds like he's set on Rakuten and no amount of quoting internet people is going to change his mind. 😄

Oh now that’s interesting.

I myself would like to open a tsumitate as well but I only have debit cards…
I often hear that Rakuten is the easiest to get a credit card for, is that correct?
I mean, I guess it is but as has been mentioned here, you don't need a card, credit or debit, to use Rakuten Securities (or SBI or Monex). You just need a bank account to transfer money from.

I think he’s just being lazy to look into Monex tbh but it’s not my decision to make.

Just out of interest, do any of these have English?

The Monex card is issued only to existing Monex Sec members. It is also issued by a smaller card company, and auto-rejects those with middle names.

There is a way to request a paper form, but most foreigners seem to have quite a lot of issues getting it vs Rakuten or SMBC cards.

He's Japanese so he'd be fine but he's not a Monex Sec member anyway so maybe he is better off with Rakuten.
Me too, I guess.

I have Monex and Rakuten. Prefer Rakuten myself too. But they are devaluing their points when their card is used to invest, so the benefits of the whole Rakuten ecosystem will be reduced a bit (from November, I think?)
