My 30yr home loan was around 1.9% and I paid it off 10 years early.

The first ten years were fixed at 2.5% (?) and there were tax benefits, then it dropped a bit.

One reason was the yen has been over ¥100 most of that time, and sending it stateside for better returns didn't seem like a good idea.

We have our iDecos and NISAs going full-on now. I admit I would have probably gotten more in the market, but having it off the books is a good feeling.

I definitely would not pay the loan off early under your current circumstances. If however there were some drastic changes, say Interest rates rose rapidly or you wanted to retire earlier than anticipated, then having your loan off the books would start to look attractive.

I still had about 5 years of home loan repayments to go when I retired but I paid them off immediately. I have zero regrets about getting rid of my only debt.
