Hope so .... we are registered as a provider and the amount of paperwork we (actually Mrs Woozy I'm glad to say) had to submit was insane and the process was truly awful ... and then they pulled the plug after we had just one client use the scheme

Anyway, there are already lots of prefectures offering similar discounts (50%). For example here on Kyushu:

Hyogo had one for residents which we scored via lottery. Used it for an onsen and dinner a couple times. It got extended fortunately. 40% off I think, but only Mon-Thurs.

Delayed by Omicron, it does finally look like the Go To Travel campaign is about to relaunch. Hope so, got some amazing deals last time (genuine 50‰ discounts). If you're about to book a summer break it may be worth holding off until more info is released.

Camping in the mountains is fairly popular here, but don’t forget about beach camping too. It’s super cheap (or usually free) and these are honestly some of my best memories here in Japan. Getting a few friends together, setting up tents, getting a little beach fire going. You won’t have to pay for a hotel, and getting out in the wild is extremely satisfying (at least for me).

I was under the impression that beach camping was illegal. Is it a case of finding a remote enough location, as not to be found??

Depends on the time of year on how strictly they enforce this if it even is a law I think...
I've camped directly on the beach down in Shizuoka in the off-season and had zero issues...
During the actual summer break at the same place I remember Police coming, but so many folks were camping that there was little they could do...
As far as legit free camping on/by the beach, I've always camped near Himi in Toyama Prefecture... Very cool spot indeed as you can camp in amongst the pine trees (for shade) within 5~10m of the beach itself...

I have camped on beaches a number of times, usually off-season in uncrowded areas.
