Do you know providers not managed by NTT?
I am really interested in this. My wife's school has internet (NTT/OCN) that basically doesn't work between 17 and 20 or so (basically when we need it). Had them round a few times to check it and they weren't much help.
I am also interested in paying more for a dedicated line or similar.

We use Yahoo BB.
Its been relatively smooth but recently the service has taken a nose dive. Clearing the cache did help matters, as did unplugging the modem.
A competing regional company rep stopped by the other day claiming they were cheaper and just as fast.
I passed on the opportunity, but kept the contact information anyway.
NTT appears broken and in a nosedive towards insolvency.
Last year they came to us claiming they wanted more money for our phone book ad, yet we get maybe 2 or 3 calls a year from it.
We told them we were cancelling.
They sent a bill for the increased price anyway.
We called to complain and cancel.
They apologized and offered us 50% off the next year.
We accepted.
Its been 12 months since that event and once again they come hat in hand for a service nobody uses.
We told them we were cancelling.
Its been quiet as a tomb for about 2 weeks, but I expect some call center to start hitting us with regularity before their deadline approaches.

I think au hikari runs over KDDI's own network. Kansai Denryoku also have their own internet service called eonet, but that's only for Kansai.

I've been extremely happy with Nuro (So-Net) connection.
Lightening fast and it's about Y3,500 a month including a landline.
I got a deal on the first three months (Y500/month)
They also waived the construction / installation fee and such, which was nice.
Did I mention it's lightening fast?

I was looking at that the other day. Man, I wish it was an option. They don't do Tohoku yet...

Looks like the price increases after the first year to around 4700 yen/month. Still, a little cheaper than flets and better performance. Hopefully it expands quickly.
