Looking for more aggressive investment avenues

Post by Roger Van Zant »

I am a big fan of the eMAXIS Slim 全世界株式(オール・カントリー).
I buy into it using both my iDeCo, and my つみたてNISA.
It seems not so risky, and something that can be left and forgotten about for the long term.

However, just out of curiosity, I am wondering about more aggressive/higher risk funds.

I might be tempted to put a smaller amount each month (less than ¥10,000) into such a fund.

Can anyone here point me in the direction of, say, three such higher-risk funds? Either using iDeCo or NISA....

My iDeCo is with Monex. My つみたてNISA is with SBI. I haven't used my Rakuten account for anything as yet.

Thanks!

One thing you might consider is buying the underlying components yourself, but changing the allocations to be higher risk.

When I got into this several years ago the books I read said something like "20% for emerging market stocks...", and so that's what I have been going with.
But I recall the all country fund has what seems to be a less aggressive allocation in emerging market stocks, with the majority going into developed market stocks.

Actually my Monex account has this "Monex Vision" feature which analyzes my portfolio. It is telling me that my risk is too high, and I could reduce it by buying some Japanese stocks (currently I have none). So conversely, if you were to buy emaxis slim stock funds for emerging markets and developed markets individually, you could eliminate exposure to Japanese stocks that way, and thus increase your risk.
(Personally, I don't know that I agree with Monex Vision about Japanese stocks being lower risk, although from a currency exposure perspective I guess they are.)

If you really want risk you could look at leveraged funds, but that's really stamping on the accelerator and may lead to an accident :)

Are you looking for ETFS or single stocks?

This forum does not really seem to support stock speculation.

When it comes to ETFs....

....

Sector ETFs offer the possibility of high returns. As the saying goes, one of these will be the "winner" each year, you just need to pick the right one!

Vanguard Sector ETFS - w/Rakuten
Vanguard US Material Sector ETF (Ticker: VAW)
Vanguard US Information Technology Sector ETF (Ticker: VGT)
Vanguard / US Consumer Goods / Services / Sector ETF (Ticker: VCR)
Vanguard US Healthcare Sector ETF (Ticker: VHT)
Vanguard / US Household Goods Sector ETF (Ticker: VDC)
Vanguard / US Capital Goods / Services / Sector ETF (Ticker: VIS)
Vanguard US Energy Sector ETF (Ticker: VDE)
Vanguard US Telecommunications Services Sector ETF (Ticker: VOX)
Vanguard US Financial Sector ETF (Ticker: VFH)
Vanguard US Utility Sector ETF (Ticker: VPU)

ETFs and Mutual funds are similar but have differences.

Let's focus on the differences.

....

ETFs are traded during regular exchange hours. Their prices fluctuate as they are bought and sold throughout the day. They are also affected by after-hours trading in the futures market. Further, some ETFs are affected by Options trading.

You must also purchase ETFs in "shares." 1 "share" will have a fluctuating daily price.

....

Mutual Funds are not traded during exchange hours. When you set your purchase it may take a few days to purchase. This is because Mutual funds are traded at the end of the trading day, between the different major players.

You can purchase mutual funds in Yen/dollar amounts and do not need to worry about purchasing shares.

Mutual funds tend to encourage long term investing.

....

I may have missed something by those are the basics.

Just remember that 'potential for higher gains' comes with the flipside of 'potential for higher losses/underperformance'. Particularly for funds with more expensive annual fees!

I've been overweighting emerging markets for a while, as they seem cheap compared to the US. However, they have severely underperformed the US market during that time.

Your results will likely vary.

Here's a proposal: Send me half your portfolio, and I'll return it in 6 months at 10% interest. Unless something comes up, then I might not return all of it. Maybe half of it.

If that doesn't sound like a good deal, maybe don't worry about chasing returns until you've got a better feel for your risk tolerance.

I think you can answer this question yourself! You said you already purchased some of this fund, correct?

Did you purchase in shares or Yen amounts? Was it instant, or did it take a few days?

True. Took a few days as I recall. Purchased a yen amount, I think. So mutual fund.
Thanks!
