I don't have $100,000 dollars on hand to do IB. That's what you need to start with them, right? Otherwise, they charge you $10 per month or something like that, right?

When I looked into IB I think the requirement was 1 million yen (about $10,000) and they seem to expect some regular account activity.

It is still 100,000 USD on their international site, below that it is a 10 USD monthly fee (paid fees for transaction gets substracted from it). Not sure about the Japanese Account (which has very limited appeal imo). On the other hand if you buy an ETF for 4000 USD on SBI, you pay 20 USD for the transaction.

Unless it's on this list or in a NISA.

Still have to pay to sell though.

Thanks for the info. Question on that. I have registered with Rakuten and SBI (American guy) and will be buying ETFs. I chose the NISA account that goes up to 1.2 million yet or something like that. So I can't buy ETFs with this account? Is that what I'm reading from other threads?

Normally you can buy pretty much anything in an ordinary NISA account (the 1.2m version). However, I believe some brokers have restrictions on US citizens due to IRS rules. Not too sure of the details though!
