Since your question reads as "Can I do it smoothly, or do I have to use a Japanese broker", what do you mean by smoothly? With a Japanese broker, the only complexity is converting to USD, other than that it's pretty simple.

Thanx RJ and Adamu for replying.
In regards to smoothly,I mean by not using a Japanese brokerage, since I don't wanna harass the missus on what to do,if written in Japanese . Though apparently we have an SBI account somewhere that was once used.I'll have a look at Inter,ta RJ.

I use Monex to buy US stocks exclusively.
The website is in Japanese, nothing chrome inline translation can't handle.
The main perk is that the iOS app which is used for the actual purchasing and selling of the US stock is available in English, so once you work out how to transfer money from your bank to the account on the website, not too difficult, the process of buying the stocks can all be done in English.

Is there Monex app for Android phone, in English?

I'm just in the process of opening an account with Firstrade, which seems quite smooth so far.
They are based in America, but accept accounts based in Japan.

Wow! How did I miss your reply.
How is it? Did you manage to open? What you mean by "accounts based in Japan" - they have Japanese branch or just accept investors who currently reside in Japan?
Re: Buying US stocks from Japan.
I've just got access to my new Monex account.
Even with Chrome and google translation, I can barely figure out where to click.
Is it possible to hook it up with my Shinsei ban account ? I've read a bank list they worked with and I don't remember seein Shinsei on this list.
Also, have you guys tried investing in the canadian stock market ?
