How did the J Taxi industry manage to swallow UBER?

Post by AustinJapan »

In my country, UBER were the enemy, and lthe taxi industry and U ER were like and water. UBErR kicked the taxi industry's butt. But not here. How did they manage to do this? They swallowed UBER somehow. And now regular taxis wear the UBER badge.

Taxis are everywhere (at least in Tokyo), cheap (often cheaper than Uber), reliable and clean. Uber's success in other countries is mostly due to the lack of these properties in said country.

In Japan Uber seems to take the form of a more premium service, which is nice to have on occasion. But the regular taxi industry is good enough that there is no need for another service.

I've been told than another reason Uber hasn't taken off in Japan is because so few people in the cities can drive, have a car and have the spare time to do such work.

I don't think that's the case. There were plenty of drivers before it got banned.

That is not the experience of myself or my friends in Tokyo. They would occasionally try Uber for a joke as it would take 5 times longer to arrive and be far more expensive than a usual Japanese cab.
