Car Insurance

Post by oki-j »

Good morning,

I've just purchased a 2nd. hand car. I have to have basic coverage when I get the Shaken, but does anyone have additional coverage? If so, which company / policy would you recommend?

Cheers:)

Good grief! Don't drive without added coverage!

Cost depends on what you choose (limits), different companies cost about the same in my experience. You can save a bit by not insuring your own car.

I would never drive without unlimited 3rd party cover for damage and injuries. We don't insure our own cars (車両保険) as they are pretty old now and not worth much.

Imagine being involved in an accident where someone was badly hurt, or where you damaged an expensive vehicle or structure. Without insurance you would be completely ruined.

This is precisely what insurance is for, to protect you from risks that you couldn't survive.

A few years ago I accidentally backed our car into a pillar on the porch of a house we were visiting. No big deal, I thought, until the person called up to say that their house was now tilting and structurally unstable...

Fortunately we had insurance, so our only expense was a box of fruit to say sorry (and increased premiums).

You can compare providers on the kakaku website: https://hoken.kakaku.com/kuruma_hoken/
