Beginner question

Post by Beaglehound »

If you haven’t contributed to the Japanese pension for the 10 year minimum qualifying period so get no pay out does this affect in any way one’s Ideco potential payout? I ask because I came to Japan a year ago, am very likely to retire here with my Japanese wife but there is a small chance I won’t. I know you have to be a nenkin payer to contribute to Ideco and would imagine that as a separate product the payments are not linked but can’t find anything specific about that.

You need to be currently paying into nenkin in some form to be able to open and pay into an iDeCo account. If you stop paying into nenkin for some reason, you will also not be able to further fund your iDeCo. However, this has no effect on the balance of your account, or the performance of the contents. You'll be able to cash out as normal at age 60-70 :)
