Not sure what you mean. Can you provide an example?

Seems like this is just another name for a mutual fund? Japan has both mutual funds (投資信託) and ETFs. The former is quite competitive now and there are many low-cost products available.

Ah, let me investigate this a little more.

Here is a link to a company that I'm familiar with and am trying to find similar in Japan.

Okay, that looks like a hedge fund to me, albeit with slightly better fees. Not aware of anything in Japan, although I presume there may be companies willing to do business with Japanese residents.

Anyone else?

A unit trust is British English for a mutual fund (American English).

Like UIT's in the USA? I would stay away from them, now that ETFs exist and you can buy directly into the private markets now.
If it is a UIT in the USA, then I would steer towards the ETFs RPG and DGRW in the USA(only if you have a 10 years investment horizon and want growth).

Some of the largest ETF's in the US (SPY, QQQ) are organized as Unit Investment Trusts.

If I remember the origination story of SPY correctly from the series "The ETF Story" the UIT structure was chosen because it protects investors against unrealized capital gains. It does require setting a termination date but that makes little difference if you set it a hundred years or more in advance as that link shows.
