Oh really? I didn't know there was a points system for that. Or did you convert to that from the HSP point system?
Permanent Residency - how long did it take?

I am not sure what the HSP point system is, but yes there is a point system for the permanent visa.
Its a seperate application form you submit along with your application

Re: Permanent Residency - how long did it take?
So I finally got my PR today - hooray! - and it only took, er, eight months. Thanks to people who responded to this thread when I asked questions.
But now I have one more! So, I now have PR but it appears my 在留カード expires in 7 years. So what happens when you renew the card? Has anyone done this? Is it something I can do at a ward office or has this all been for a longer gap between renewing and going back to the immigration office? Seven years is a long time but still, I thought I'd seen the last of that terrible place...

You have to go to immigration. It was very quick when I did it.

Thanks. Ugh. I was kind of hoping to be done with that place. When you say "quick" how long are we talking compared to visa renewal? From what I can tell Shinagawa is always absolutely packed, it took me over two hours today.
I guess I don't need think about it will 2026. Think I'll try the other place next time anyway in Tachikawa(?).

My experience here in Sendai is that immigration is seldom crowded and I normally get seen in a couple of minutes

These days I take my rock climbing shoes with me and go to the gym next door while I wait for my turn to come around
Re: Permanent Residency - how long did it take?
Just renewed mine today at my local office, which was almost empty. Took about 15 minutes in total. I arrived at 10-ish..
I had to fill in a simple form (of course, even though all the information was on my card!) and glue a passport-sized photo to it. (On the renewal postcard they sent they said to write my name on the back of the photo, which seems to be pointless if it’s then glued to the form). They also wanted to see my passport - no idea why.
This time it’s valid for seven years (last time was 9). No idea why.
They gave me my old card back with a hole punched it in.
