I am a US citizen and have some investments in a US brokerage that were started a long time ago before I came to Japan. Now that I'm firmly settled and will retire here, I'd like to consolidate all of my investments in Japan. I do recognize that leaving the US investments overseas is a perfectly viable option, but in my case, I see significant advantages in bringing them all together here. Does anyone here have experience doing this or could offer tips about good ways to do it?
Some details:
- I'm still checking specifics, but I believe that some of my US holdings (ETFs, garden-variety stocks, bonds, options) can be transferred to my Japan brokerage (IBSJ) using an ACATS transfer, but I don't have experience with ACATS.
- ACATS would seem like a convenient option, as there would not be any sales, thus no capital gains or taxable events.
- Some of the US holdings might not be transferable to IBSJ. For these, I'm guessing that selling these through the US broker, transferring the cash to Japan, and then purchasing new securities here through IBSJ would be my second-best approach. Would that be right?
- If I do sell the non-transferrable holdings, my guess is that the way to handle this tax-wise would be to file my Japanese taxes next March and pay capital gains, then file my US taxes in April with the same capital gains info, then finally claim anything back from the Japanese government for which I've been overcharged if needed.
- Does that workflow seem right? I'm guessing I might have to enlist the help of an accountant on the Japan side for doing this.
