The Daily Telegraph- what do you think?

Post by IloveJapan »

Back in the 80’s, I was told that the Telegraph was one of the quality papers in the UK. It had a reputation for being right wing, and you may or may not agree with its views, but the journalism’s quality seemed fine.

For their site, they have an online paywall so I can’t read any of their stuff now, but looking at just the titles of the articles makes me wonder if it is still a quality paper now, or is it more like a tabloid?

It used to be good but it's as shit as the Mail now. I cancelled my subsciption a few years ago.

Social media feeds promote sensationalism even more than the tabloids. If that's where you're getting the titles from, the solution is to cut down on social media.

I'd recommend the Economist for their more in-depth centrailist reporting. Their Espresso app is for more daily news, when their normal app offers the weekly paper along with a professional voiced audio version.

Supplement with Reuters and you're fine.

I still get the Telegraph- I think it comes from loyalty from having the Expat Telegraph newspaper delivered to my first address in Japan when I first lived here nearly 30 years ago. The internet was very much in its infancy and I used to also get the Japan Times, which used to be a really good daily read.

I like the Telegraph's sports, obits and most of its business coverage but it has gone too much into GB news territory and identity politics- or reaction to it. I am seriously thinking of moving onto the Times, would anybody recommend the move? I also follow Nils Pratley business coverage in the Guardian, his analysis is spot on even though it might not be as Guardianesque as other journalists on the newspaper. Fortunately, it is not behind a paywall.

I switched to the Times and would recommend it. Apart from the occasional op-ed by Gerald Baker it’s free of the type of rubbish that fills up the Telegraph now. Very little evidence it’s owned by Murdoch in the content.

I pair it with The Guardian (which is free) and get some kind of balance that way.

Also subscribe to the FT for finance stuff.

Politico is good for US news and free too.

They do remind you how many articles you've read in the past year. I'd read over 50, so I sent them a $50 one-off payment.

I believe the Telegraph falls into the tabloid category (even though personally they treated me well -- they published a review of a book I wrote). I felt they were not truthful about Britain's European neighbours and the whole Brex-shit-show.

i still think its pretty good- and i like the sport section-politically it can be a bit out there with random bizarre stuff being posted.
what is true across all papers now is there is a lot of women talking about their sex lives or whatever-its nearly always women writing this stuff.
the telegraph is actually very cheap online about 4000yen a yr
