On the top page of Rakuten Shoken look for the 保有商品一覧 option. Clicking on this will show you all of the assets you own separated by type of account. Once January comes the funds that were in your 2020 old-NISA will disappear and will now be reflected as a tokutei account.Sorry to bother you again but how will i know if its moved into a TAXABLE account? 特定口座になる?

Thank you for that. Very useful. I still don't know why they just didn't roll it over.eyeswideshut wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2024 10:47 pmOn the top page of Rakuten Shoken look for the 保有商品一覧 option. Between 特定、NISA成長投資枠、NISAつみたて投資枠、 一般。
It is getting more complicated.
what is the 一般 apart from GENERAL account? I thought The General NISA provides tax exemption for up to five years on gains from investments in listed shares, investment trusts and other financial instruments. However, I thought the bog-standard tsumitate NISA account did the same thing?

In taxable there are 2 kinds of accounts: 一般 and 特定. 一般 accounts do not withold tax so you will need to declare any gains when you sell and/or receive dividends. 特定 automatically witholds taxes which is generally better unless you are taking profits and losses across multiple asset streams or accounts.

General NISA is referred to a 旧NISA and new NISA is referred to as either as NISAつみたて投資枠 or as 成長投資枠新NISA and will be marked as such in your Rakuten.
All very confusing I agree but it is important to understand the difference before making any purchases.

一般= i've gotta do the tax.( not sure why they think the average Mrs Suzuki san would ever want to do that.
特定= This would make the most obvious "default" for the average Mrs Suzuki.
NISAつみたて投資枠 and 成長投資枠新NISA easy to understand.

To pick nits, but 特定口座 do not necessarily withhold taxes - I have mine set not to do so. This is the 源泉徴収あり/なし option.eyeswideshut wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 3:33 amIn taxable there are 2 kinds of accounts: 一般 and 特定. 一般 accounts do not withold tax so you will need to declare any gains when you sell and/or receive dividends. 特定 automatically witholds taxes which is generally better unless you are taking profits and losses across multiple asset streams or accounts.

So far as I understand the benefit of the automatically tax withdrawing variant of 特定口座 is that one won’t need to file a tax return, but since I file a tax return anyway for furusato nozei and various other things, I see no benefit from having my tax taken from my account by my broker as soon as I realize a capital gain.
Indeed if your capital gains and other income are less than 200,000 yen the you aren’t even obligated to file a tax return to report profits.

Nits are there to be picked! Thanks for the clarification as I had forgotten that you need to designate it as 源泉徴収あり to set it to withhold taxes automatically. It does beg the question as to what the difference is between a 源泉徴収なし特定 account and an 一般 account. To pick nits, but 特定口座 do not necessarily withhold taxes - I have mine set not to do so. This is the 源泉徴収あり/なし option.

You read my mind! I rather late to the party, but having finally set up an account with Rakuten, I’m keen to check as much at it as I can afford, before Dec 31st deadline (I assume that’s the deadline). I guess the emaxis slim is still the one to go first. Indeed, if I’d have got my act together sooner I wouldn’t have missed out and on its substantial gains in 2024! Ho hum.
I have a few Qs, which have doubtless been answered in previous posts
1. Lifetime limit of JPY18mill
Is the based on a certain end date, or age? I turned 55 this September, so is it tied to the current retirement age of 60?
2. Maximum annual amount
For Tsumitate, does this have to be a regular monthly contribution throughout the year, or can it be deposited as a lump sum? I assume either regular monthly contributions are fine with the growth portion?
3. Where to buy and keep Emaxis slim? Both Tsumitate and growth
Apologies for my ignorance!
