I have asked a few friends to see what the general impression of (https://florence.or.jp/english/) is and there don't seem to be any skeletons hiding in closets.
Thank you for the info.

Who is Mr Smith?
What is his charity?

Criticism of microcredit aside (and boy are there a lot), Kiva is exactly what OP said they did not want. Also, it seems to be opposite to your own stated aims of avoiding lush charities?Bubblegun wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 12:57 pmThats OK. I don't think there is a perfect charity or organisation. I chose a few countries and chose a few people who would like help. They invest it to help themselves and improve their lives. It does put a face to it, which I personally like. Just incase anyone is interested.

I also give to veteran charities but only the big national ones. I have a distaste for Mr Smith starting his own charity in Japan and suddenly being able to fund a big 4x4, a big new home, and send their kids to private school.(in Japan). Not too dissimilar to the family who ran Captain Tom's NHS charity.
We can only give to what we feel comfortable with. Kudo to the O.P.
https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/0 ... ey-making/Combined, Kiva’s top 10 executives made nearly $3.5 million in 2020. In 2021, nearly half of Kiva’s revenue went to staff salaries.
You are not funding people in rural communities, you are subsidizing a system that charges them exorbitantly high-interest loans.
No bueno.

It’s a Japanese charity, run by a non Japanese person, that is supposed to be for development overseas.
I guess we can all find a gotcha moment for all charities.
I decided to give sponsorship to a few individuals based on the research that cash has consistently delivered better outcomes to people who wish to do something.
(I take other points on loans) however, I’m not a fan of watching a bunch of engineers from
The U.S, Europe, (at great expense)spending money on lovey Toyota 4x4s and all the engineers managed to do was dig a small well and pop a toilet into a school.I still think giving the cash directly ( even though some will be lost) to that school, village or farmer.
Veteran charities I do give to.
My kids also got involved, and that has to be something we all agree on is worth investing in.

Re: Please suggest a charity
I apologize for being so insistent about my criticism. I previously donated to them, and then someone I know in the academic field of nonprofit studies broke it down for me and I was a bit horrified.
Currently I focus on those that have a good track record:
A. Second Harvest
B. MSF - Médecins Sans Frontières
C. The Red Cross
D.https://booksanta.charity-santa.com/
A, B and C have credit card tsumitate donation options in YEN

No problem. We’re all trying to feel and do good at what we do.Tsumitate Wrestler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 2:26 amI apologize for being so insistent about my criticism. MSF is one I would most certainly consider and escaped my radar. That charity never quite gets the same recognition as the Red Cross. Orbis is another charity I have given too and I have known many staff members who worked on the plane. Truly an awesome charity and imho gives the biggest bang for our buck and I know how it works.

It actually teaches the local doctors, so when they go away, they’ve left the local doctors able to do the operations. There is also a ship that does the same mission.
Btw feel free to send me a pm me with your information you have It is always good to review our choices. Whether that is the shop we buy our stuff at or the charities we give to.
