I think it is basically saying that even if you have set up your account as 特定(源泉徴収あり) you may elect to file kakutei shinkokuvif you wish to claim foreign tax credit or to set off capital losses against capital gains within your holdings.ToushiTime wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 3:56 amAh, that would explain why I am only shown 課税 when trading US stocks on Monex.ChapInTokyo wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:59 amWhen you set up the account, Monex will already have your account set up for 特定(課税あり) or 特定(課税なし) or 一般 in your user profile.
So the selection you make when you put in your order for US ETFs is whether it's for 課税(taxable) or 非課税(tax exempt). Or in other words, non-NISA or NISA.
However, this seems to suggest you have a choice when trading US stocks, even if you have a 特定(源泉徴収あり) account.

On SBI, I have a 特定(源泉徴収あり) account with no NISA set up, but I am offered a choice of 特定 (預り) or 一般 each time I buy a US stock or US ETF.

That makes sense. So a 特定(源泉徴収あり) account at Monex gives you the option of filing a kakutei shinkoku for US stock transactions to claim tax deductions but you cannot avoid the withholding tax, correct?ChapInTokyo wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 12:30 amI think it is basically saying that even if you have set up your account as 特定(源泉徴収あり) you may elect to file kakutei shinkokuvif you wish to claim foreign tax credit or to set off capital losses against capital gains within your holdings.ToushiTime wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 3:56 amAh, that would explain why I am only shown 課税 when trading US stocks on Monex.ChapInTokyo wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:59 am

SBI lets me choose 特定 (預り) or 一般 (預り) for each US stock trade. If I hit 一般 (預り) by accident would that execute the trade without withholding the tax?

I think it took a day or two to reach my Japanese bank using the regular speed option, which was free for me. I could have paid 300 yen or so for instant transfer. It tells you how much it will cost before you hit send.
Re: monex tokutei
But that is after the completion of the sale. That also takes a few days, depending on what fund it is. All-Country takes longer than S&P500, for example.ToushiTime wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 10:28 amI think it took a day or two to reach my Japanese bank using the regular speed option, which was free for me. Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

Re: monex tokutei
I have only bought Japanese stocks on SBI so this is just an educated guess but I think that if you buy US stocks or ETFs on SBI with the account toggled to 一般(預かり) then when you sell those shares SBI will not calculate your capital gains or withhold taxes on those capital gains so you’d need to do the maths yourself and then pay the tax man yourself on those shares/ETFs. One point to note is that even in an 一般(預かり) account, taxes will be withheld from any dividends that are paid by your shares/ETFs, so on that score there is no difference between 特定 and 一般.ToushiTime wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 10:24 amThat makes sense.
