Best Credit Card for a Student

Post by TJKansai »

What experience/recommendations do you have for someone who is a full-time student with just a bit of part-time income?

There are a bunch on this site:

Mitsui and JCB seem to be preferred.
AMEX is free until age 26.

And then there is Aeon, Rakuten etc.

Good question and I am also interested in good suggestions.
I was thinking about just a SONY Bank account and a debit card as a first step for our eldest.

With very limited/no income is it easy to get a credit card for a youngster?
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

JAL Club EST for sure. You get to use the Sakura lounge and 5 years expiration limit on your miles!

That does look good for a young business person who flies a fair bit.

We ended up getting a Mitsui Sumitomo card (top of the list). Hassle adding the Japan Post Bank for payments so went with the Mizuho Bank for that. I think there is no real income requirement (though we put in ¥100,000 for his part-time).

How old?

Does said student have a NISA or iDeCo?

Rakuten Card, NISA, etc... ???

If not yet 18, then a Family Card...

This Guide to Japanese Taxes, English and Japanese Tai-Yaku 対訳, is now a little dated:

The Publisher is not planning to publish an update for '23 Tax Season.
