Hello,
When doing my taxes for the year, can I submit my insurance payments (life insurance/hospital insurance) for possible taxes back? If so, does anyone know the proper words in Japanese?
Thank you.
Insurance payments - taxes back?
Re: Insurance payments - taxes back?
There is a modest relief of ¥40,000 or ¥50,000 (depending on when the policy was taken out) from your income for life insurance policies issued in Japan.
You need to fill in a tax return to claim it and submit the card they sent you some time last year.
It’s all in the tax guide on the JTA website

Note that the relief is capped, regardless of how much you actually pay in premiums.
We need to be careful here with phrases like “taxes back” which have no meaning
There are deductions from income (e.g. life insurance payments, spouse deduction) and there are deductions from tax payable (e.g. home loan tax refund). Very different.
