1.2 mill NISA limit

Post by OkiBum »

As of December 1st, 2018 I had utilized 1 mill of my NISA limit. Then on the 21st of December, I placed an order worth 200,000 to buy an Emaxis Slim fund. It says that the order was accepted on the 28th of December (face value of my purchase price) and delivered on 4th or 5th of January.

When I click on NISA for the breakdown, it shows me that I only utilized 1mill out of the 1.2 mill in 2018 and have so far utilized 200,000 from my 2019 limit. I use Rakuten Securities and was wondering if this is an error on their part? If not, then I do not want to bother breaking my head with the call center staff to explain to them in Japanese on the current issue.

Thanks in advance!

I did the same thing with my wife's NISA: noticed we hadn't used the full allowance, put in an order in mid- to late December, and found they had applied it to the 2019 year.

I guess the lesson here is to take care of NISA by early December at the latest :(

Hmm..lesson learned indeed!

So I'm guessing its pointless to call Rakuten Securities and try to sort this out?

If you took delivery after January 1st there is nothing they can do to make this a 2018 NISA purchase. The US allows IRA purchases until the tax filing deadline for that year (e.g. around April 15 for a 2018 IRA contribution) but NISA's are strictly calendar-year.

When I was doing regular NISA 2 years ago, I clearly remember getting a notification from Rakuten about when the deadline for placing an order on a fund was for December. Because fund orders take so long to go through, and with the end of year breaks, Rakuten clearly spelled it out.

I made my final purchases on Dec 25. But I could only buy funds that had a 4 day delivery. Since you placed the order on the 21st, I'm guessing you bought a fund with a 5 or 6 day delivery.

So i gave Rakuten a call and they said that nothing can be done about it (as expected)

Yes, I did place the order on the 21st and it says the 予定日is the 28th of December. However, the 受渡日 is the 9th of January so it falls under the 2019 allowance.

Sigh, i thought I had maxed out my 2018 allowance but I was wrong.

Lesson for all, place your orders by 2nd week of Dec :(

If it's any consolation, the limit was actually 1M when NISA first started.

Still doesn't compare to the UK one which is about 2.8M every year with no time limit though...
