SBI証券 and your nationality

Post by Roger Van Zant »

I received a message from SBI asking me to check if any of my details have changed recently, and to update them accordingly under the "My Details" section of their website. I use SBI for my t-NISA.

I updated my work details, and I happened to notice that my nationality is set to 日本.
Is this the same for anyone else?

I guess I should call them and ask them to change it, but I am worried I might get in trouble for not noticing this until now.

Hmmm. It's only an issue if you are a US Citizen or Green Card Holder...

No problem if UK..

On the issue of whether you'd get into trouble, don't know, but probably not... How long have you had the account?

Had the account for about five years.
Yeah, I’m a UK citizen.

Isn't this just a USA person / non-USA person demarkation?
So Brits and everyone else just get lumped in as 'Japan-based' or 'Japanese?

Theoretically it could get Roger (or more accurately SBI themselves) in trouble because they haven't been doing KYC properly and asking him to confirm his residency.

Ah, in which case he definitely should inform the broker.

Just to update, in case anyone else finds themselves in the same boat....

I called SBI (03-5562-7530) and told them the issue.
They sent me an email with a case number in the subject line, and asked me to reply to it, uploading something to prove my UK citizenship.
I first sent back a copy of my British passport, but this was rejected. :o
I tried again this morning with a 住民票 showing my nationality.
Hoping this should convince them.
Apparently a copy of my 在留カード would also be acceptable.
