New to NISA, wishing clarifications!

Post by greensquirrel »

Greetings!
I'm currently new to NISA scene and wishing to start investing from 27-years old in ETFs.
If possible, could someone confirm if the following questions holds true?

Questions
■ 1. Max savings investment annually is 1.2 million yen, and dividends/growth from this year is limited to 2.4 million yen?
・What happens if 2.4 million yen is surpassed? Does one get taxed for this?
・I assume that the total of the two resets every year (3.6 million yen)?

■ 2. What happens once I reach 18 million yen?
・Do I get taxed after 18 million yen?
・Would I have to transfer it to a normal brokerage account?

Current Plan
1. Start investing in 2024 since I don't wanna complicate myself with the old/new NISA.
2. Find a broker that offers new NISA that has the lowest trust fee for ETF (eg. S&P 500)

If anyone has any tips/suggestions/advice, please feel free to comment! Thanks for reading the post! :)

No. There is no limit to the growth.

There are 2 parts to new NISA from 2024, explained in the link below.
1.2million is in 'safe' investments (funds/investment trusts), the other 2.4 million can also be used for individual stocks.

Each year you get to invest 3.6M up to the lifetime maximum of 18M.
This is based on contributions, not the value of your investments.

Read the new NISA section here.

Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

By the way, starting in 2023 is recommended. The sooner, the better.
Many suggest tsumitate is better if starting this year due to the 20-year length vs 5 years for 2023 regular NISA.

In your brokerage account there will not be any confusion about old vs new NISA.

All brokers pretty much have access to the same products for NISA. I recommend using one of the big online ones (Rakuten, SBI, Monex)
