This Guide to Japanese Taxes, English and Japanese Tai-Yaku 対訳, is now a little dated:

The Yield of an ETF will be paid out, and therefore subject to 20.315% Tax

The Dividends within the Mutual Fund will be reinvested inside the Mutual Fund and not subject to tax.

The Management Fees of the Mutual Fund are expressly stated.

The Management Fees of the ETF are handled internally as the ETF Price is quoted daily on the Exchange.

Nice, great answer. I interpret this as ETFs are better for the short term and Mutual Funds for the long term returns.

ETFs also report their management fees as a "management expense ratio". Both mutual funds and ETFs experience trading fees but they are more difficult to evaluate and describe. For the mutual fund, those fees are happening with the bid and ask ratios for stocks it buys and sells while for the ETF you experience the fees when you buy or sell ETF shares.
