I'm planning to apply for permanent residence in Japan and I was wondering if anybody else has already done this.

This is probably a really dumb question, but are there any downsides to switching to permanent residence?

Something about the word 'permanent' sounds scary ;-)

It can make you eligible for the exit tax (if you are not already on a spouse visa).
