Re: Bike accident
Doesn’t seem a dreadful outcome; as the insurance company wasn’t factoring in repair as an issue, I don’t imagine they would change their stance due to increased repair cost. Maybe look at a second hand bike if a new one isn’t viable?
Re: Bike accident
That’s what I was thinking. Just annoying as the bike was a good bike and I’m unlikely to find another one as good for me second hand.
Re: Bike accident
So accepting my fate as a poor person, I can’t afford to get another pedal assist. In which case I need to get a new bike.
Just been to the asahi bike shop where my current bike is being dealt with but told them not to fix it and that I’ll look for a new non electric one.
Is it just asahi or is japan’s selections of bike pretty lacklustre?
I was a bike with a decent sized basket, back rack, and to be suitable for my height (180cm), so that my knees aren’t bashing the handles, and that doesn’t weigh over 20kg.
Is that too much to ask?

Oh, I also don’t want my arse over my head. I want to be sat upright.

At Y-Road in Shinjuku they previously had Trek Disc FX 1 (XL) ranging from 7-8万。
However I'm 186 cm with long legs, so you might be okay on an (L) frame.

Bike insurance is a must even if you don't ride all that much. There are many cheap plans out there too.
At the start of January, I signed up for insurance via PayPay. 140 JPY/month. 3 weeks later, I hit a car on the road HARD. It was my fault at the end of the day and nothing was provided to me to fix my bike. I took the driver's passenger side mirror off and some scratches. I was thinking that the cost to my insurance company would be around 100,000 JPY or so. But I was completely floored when I saw that they paid out over 990,000 JPY! Most of that was to repair the car (and no, it wasn't a luxury or sports car - just an old vw) with about 250,000 JPY going to the cost of a rental car.
Had I not taken out insurance prior to the accident, I would have been on the hook for that entire cost

Re: Bike accident
Completely agree, but it is likely those costs would not have been quite so high if you were paying them yourself. Repair shops and people in general tend to overcharge insurance companies in these situations.DudeInJapan wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2023 11:15 am Bike insurance is a must even if you don't ride all that much. I had a minor accident once where I ran into the car in front very slowly in stopped traffic: the bumper was dented and I was quoted several hundred thousand yen to replace it and the panels around it. In the end a mechanic I know banged out the dent and charged me 4,000 yen

My understanding is that in an accident involving a bike and a car, legally it's always the car's fault, no matter who really caused it. Is that wrong?DudeInJapan wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2023 11:15 am I hit a car on the road HARD. It was my fault at the end of the day and nothing was provided to me to fix my bike.

Such strict liability laws exist in some countries but I don’t think Japan is one of them.adamu wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 7:28 amMy understanding is that in an accident involving a bike and a car, legally it's always the car's fault, no matter who really caused it. Re: Bike accident
In my case, the car had come to a complete stop (seeing me), but I didn't see it until it was too late. Had the car been in motion, the blame would have been theirs or shared.
