Japan -> UAE

Post by kuma »

off to the UAE in the summer, as I'm taking on a 2yr teaching contract
viewtopic.php?p=29265#p29265

Anyone been there, done that with a Japan -> UAE move?

Having fun and games at the mo with things such as:

* attesting documents (think I know how to do it... but attempting to do it in a method that's not excessively expensive)
* gaining police clearance certificate from Japan (need special permission from MOFA to apply for clearance + extra documents, because apparently UAE isn't on the list of countries they ordinarily issue it for...)

Thought I'd ask in case anyone's wrangled with these things before.

Back in 2008, I moved from Japan to Canada on a working holiday visa and needed police clearance to apply for the visa. At that time, this wasn’t on the list of permitted reasons to get police clearance.

My memory is hazy but I remember it not being particularly difficult to persuade them (presumably MOFA) to let me apply for it. Just remember sending in proof that I needed it but don’t remember much else about the procedure. I do remember it wasn’t much of a faff and was sorted pretty easily. Then the trip down to central Tokyo to be fingerprinted was a nice day out!

Not sure how useful this is, but getting police clearance for a reason not on the list has certainly been possible. Good luck with it!

Cheers!

Good to know it can (/could) be done.

MOFA want documentary evidence of the law/ordinance/decree stating I need police clearance. Fine if the company is asking for this document from a legal perspective; but someone (MOFA, UAE employer, or me) is not going to get what they want if the company wants this document as part of their due diligence process without it being a legal requirement!

This forum is brilliant... however niche the query, there's always someone who will provide information/experiences!

Time to consult with a judicial scrivener or lawyer and see if they are empowered to request it. Sometimes the right letterhead gets the ball rolling.

Maybe, if there is an impasse.

But some digging has unearthed legal evidence that police clearance is required for certain teachers in the UAE. Awaiting confirmation from the employer. Hopefully this hurdle is cleared.

Update: I received my police clearance certificate, and can write up the process more fully in due course.

I did not use a lawyer or scrivener; Japanese MOFA and the National Police Agency (NPA) were very clear that they needed the relevant foreign law/decree stating the necessity for the police clearance, and I was able to research and provide this myself.
