Maybe he just used the wrong chatGPT prompts?
Maybe he doesn't know anything about investing outside of buying a property and selling it a decade later for a profit.

Good possibility.
For me my house is consumption, not an investment. I will rent a car. But I like to own the house I live in, and I don’t care much if it becomes worthless, because I am consuming it, and it is better than my old rental places. Much better.
The land might hold its value, though.

I posted a link to a reddit thread on this as a comment below the Monday Read.

I think most commenters are critical of the BBC article and supportive of japan.
I actually found his description of Japan to be quite endearing. Certainly more judicious and insightful than I could have been.

It’s worth remembering that we can love something while still being aware of its flaws- a fact to which I’m sure any married couple would attest. :)

My impression was that he was (subconsciously or otherwise) trying to make himself feel better about leaving ;)

I think he is upset the inaka village didn’t react enthusiastically to the prospect of him and his family moving there.

When I read that passage, it sounded more like they were warning him off moving there for his own good.

I.E, You probably are not going to like the lifestyle here, and we are all so old we aren`t going to change. Which would seem perfectly reasonable.

Not "You are not welcome".

Perhaps, in the spirit of comparison, Rupert could visit a depopulating Scottish Highland village and make the same suggestion.

“Gerontocracy…” I love it!
It’s very seldom that somebody is able to add to my lexicon. So that just made my day. :D
What a succinct descriptor of Japan.
