Not sure that is true. I got the points immediately when I deposited the 20,000 yen into Paypay via ATM. The cash is still there (although I spent just over 1,000 yen of it the other day).
I apologize if I am wrong, the wording I have read all say that a purchase is required.

However, that may because some services only had one method and had no option to charge before spending.

I'll correct my post.

Paypay has been a big PITA for me.
I have been constantly getting "【本人確認ができませんでした】再度本人確認をお試しください" message.

I am trying to use my My Number card to verify! :(

I spent some time on this rainy holiday applying for my 20,000 My Number points.
I have a Rakuten credit card that I plan to do my Furusato Nozei with, so easy to spend the 20,000 yen to get the 5,000 points, and I feel like I deserve 5,000 yen for going through the confusing process of applying for those points.
Much easier to apply to use the card as a Health Insurance alternative, and give them a bank account number (they already know it because that's where I do my tax dealings with them!)

As for kids, mine are all under 10 and they don't have much chance to use money. They already have bank accounts, so applying for those points will be easy.

But to get the points I gather I need to get them each some kind of cashless service set up. I am doubtful that I would use these cashless services, so I ideally want something that is really easy to set up for each kid, then plunder the cash once it is available, and perhaps forget I ever knew about it after that! But maybe the seemingly gross use of tax payer money might actually introduce me to some useful service...

So, is PayPay a popular option here for kids? Any others one ought consider?

I use Rakuten Card but I guess that won't work for your kids (since you'd be using it).

Paypay is the most popular one but you could use anything you want like Rakuten Pay, dPay, nanaco, Suica or whatever. Basically any kind of cashless or point giving service will most likely also be offering MyNaPoints.

Yes I read today that your child does need their own bank account (in their own name). That’s for the 7,500 point bank account linkage campaign. (I set up kids bank accounts online via Sony Bank in the past for J-NISA related purposes, and don’t remember the process being too difficult, but doing something in person would probably be faster.)

Apparently for the linked cashless service, if your kids are under 15 you can specify some cashless service that you personally are the owner of though, so long as it is not the same one that you personally link for your own mynapoints. So it’s only the bank account that need be in their name.

Thanks. I found I already had installed PayPay in the last (but never used it… will have to try again), and then I’ve also got Majika for Donki shopping already, which should help suffice.

Yes, your family will be able to receive 7,500 yen per kid opening a bank account, effectively.

A bank account will probably be useful in future, or could be opened merely for the goal of obtaining the cash.

thanks!they have an acct but because it doesnt have the pesky middle name on it -it doesnt seem to work...will have to open another acct for them !

one more question is what is the difference between paypay money and paypay money lite?
paypay money you can withdraw money but not for lite? lite does let you transfer money to people doesnt it??
