Re: Curious about forum member age demographics
Early-mid 30s. The birth of first child made me realize I needed 5-10-20-30 plans.
I was extremely obsessive, optimized, and now it's all set and forget. I need a new hobby.

Would love to hear some of those plans. In general terms, without any specifics, will also be appreciated!TokyoBoglehead wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2022 7:53 am Early-mid 30s. The birth of first child made me realize I needed 5-10-20-30 plans.

- Term Life ✓
- 1 million Yen Emergency fund ✓
- Ideco x2 ✓
- Nisa x2 ✓
- J-Nisa x1 ✓
- Years saving in cash at Current spending/2 years if frugal (roughly 4-5million) ✓
- 10 million invested - Wife ✓
- 10 million invested - Me
- 5-10 million for downpayment
....
Longer term
10 million for kid 1 college
10 million for kid 2 college (not born yet)
100 million total in investments, not including children
...........
Basically, we will have no money to invest when the two kids are a bit older, (outside of the mandatory ideco/nisa), so we are scrambling now.

Spookily evenly distributed so far
I'm 45, but kids are all moved out/independent. It's amazing how much money you have left over suddenly when that happens

Re: Curious about forum member age demographics
for some reason, I assumed that most members were over 45. May be it was because everyone seemed so aware about finances and their individual/family goals. (which I wrongly attributed to personal life experience = age)
It could be sampling bias as well. Most people who are here are interested in personal finance. And even among them, the active members (who are more likely to respond to the poll) are more or less financial sorted bunch or on a path to their financial destination, regardless of their age.
Anywho, interesting spread.

Re: Curious about forum member age demographics
I was around 37 when I started frequenting here and am around 43 now, after a hiatus when I was not thinking about finance stuff much for some years.
For me “retire” does have the intonation of being an “old person” thing, but the broad personal finance angle is why I’m here. Retirement is one thing out in the future, but not the only one. In that sense Retire Japan is a big success since its reach has clearly broadened beyond its original name!

This is probably ineffective branding on my partsutebayashi wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 4:06 am In that sense Retire Japan is a big success since its reach has clearly broadened beyond its original name!
The site was always supposed to be for people of any age, to help them get into a position where retirement was possible/comfortable/secure.
Our target demographic, inasmuch as we have one, is people in their 30s and 40s
In my experience that is the age where people start thinking about money, and still have enough human capital to really make a difference...
