Shinsei<-> Monex - Received an Official Response.

Monex responded to my issue about not being able to connect Shinsei<->Monex.

They said that the names did match, BUT Shinsei`s database does not allow the small (小さいつ/(促音). in names, they automatically switch it to the ツ.* While Monex, and basically most other banks and Sec. firms do.

They can fix it to connect my account to Shinsei, but all other accounts connected will most likely stop working.

Color me annoyed. Yucho basically never let me down like this. I think I will let my Shinsei account gather dust for now.

Gaijin names :)

I have a “ー” character in mine that caused issues in the SBI realm. There is the full-width char version, a half-width version, and a plain old ascii hyphen. Each financial institution may represent it differently, and some don’t accept one of the options as a valid character.

Yeah, this would be extremely frustrating. I would understand the possibility of a foreign script glitch but not being able to format your own language is inexcusable.

Shinsei is a brick and mortar bank. If I were you I would visit your branch and make a stink with the manager embarrassing him as much as possible in front of his coworkers in the process. If you let things be they will never change.

I’m not sure if this example transfers (and it may just be a one off), but I’ve been able to get several city planning problems sorted out by simply directly engaging the mayor. I’m pretty sure things would’ve never changed unless I’d spoken up.

Are you suggesting I speak to a branch manager about the database design? That is not going to work sadly.

These issues are deep in their customer database, and apparently KYC rules, and the fact that they act as a handler of securities, etc, makes altering how this information is entered very difficult.

I find it hilarious that freaking YUCHO could get my name right, but not Shinsei. Oh well, it was not an essential.

Obviously a branch manager would not be able to fix the problem on the spot but they would be more likely to be able to bump the problem of the chain of command than a regular customer service/phone drone. If it is indeed a simple database mismatch someone in the company that has the authority to get things done could order cooperation with Monex to get the problem solved. This should be a snap for any competent IT professional (then again, this is Japan were the cyber security minister didn’t know what a USB drive was :? )

I understand of course a person’s time is of value too. So I wouldn’t blame you for just moving on.

When I look at the bigger picture though, I think Japan would be a better place with less apathy.

I have successful solved name issues in the past BUT the fact that Shinsei's database cannot read a ッ, and only a ツ is a far more fundamental issue apparently.

Apparently this is pretty much unfixable as the moment.

I have worked in IT for years and some of them for banks bigger than Shinsei. It definitely is not a "snap" to make any database changes especially for a field as important as customer name. You're liable to delete them all if you're not careful, for example.

He's not being snarky, there might be no solution.

They would have to go back to code to fix the issue, and test the system in isolation/quarantine for compliance with 1000s of other existing systems. This would expensive, time consuming and an absolute nightmare.

Monex said they can change my name to match Shinsei's broken system, but it would break my connection with Yucho. That's the only real solution.
