Adopting a Japanese child (non-Japanese parents)

Post by onionchutney »

I imagine there is an extremely slim chance that anyone has experience with this, but it's worth a try:

My wife and I are both from the UK and have been living in Japan for the past 7 years. We began fostering a Japanese boy in February and recently submitted a petition to adopt him.
Our question is: will this allow us to apply for a new type of visa? Some sort of carers or dependents visa perhaps? We're still picking up one-year visas every summer and would love to nip that in the bud.
He will be removed from his biological family's Family Register and a new one will be created with just him on it once the process is completed. He won't become a British citizen, rather he will remain Japanese.

Any insights at all would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Congratulations! It's an interesting question.

I know a couple of people who have adopted here: https://seanbreslin.net/2021/11/13/two- ... -know-her/
and: https://savvytokyo.com/adopt-japan-adop ... e-stories/

but I think they were already permanent residents or similar at that point. Hopefully someone has more info :D

Thanks for the swift reply. I shall check those links and see if it's possible to reach out to those families and ask.
