How to pay train fare via Google pixel smartphone?

Post by regular »

I take subway or trains very irregularly. So, I do not carry any manaka / Suica etc and therefore, need to line up to pay fare when taking trains. I see people placing their smartphone over the train wickets and getting in. I have a Google pixel handset and I have registered a credit card to pay via Google Pay. Can I pay train fare using Google pay, so that my credit card gets charged the train fare whenever I am taking the train?

If not via Google Pay, I can load other app if necessary, so that I do not have to line up before taking the train.

Please suggest how are you doing this.

It depends which Pixel you have. For early models, you can't do it.

For later models that have Felica support, you can create a new Mobile Suica (eMoney) in Google Pay. Charge it using Google Pay, then just use your phone like an IC Card.

Exactly.

Is this a Japanese Pixel. No? -> Out of luck

Any Japanese Pixel 3 or older should have support.

Very happy adamu, for your prompt reply. Yes, it supports Felica (おサイフケータイ) function. So I started to read on mobile Suica, and it seems I don't have to wait in lines to pay train fares from now on.

So, how does the transaction show up in the registered credit card statement? Because the train fare is not dirctly charged to the credit card, rather the card is used to store credit, say 5000 yen to a pool from where the fare is taken out, right?

Also, if I lose my handset now, I will be losing real cash. Hmm!

You can automatically set your card to be charged, so you`ll keep a minimum amount, or you can charge it yourself at any time.

The charge shows up on your CC, just like any other charge. The credit is store on your account, which is connect to the app.

You can charge via the Mobile Suica app or Via Google Pay.

No, there is a lost/new handset procedure to reclaims or refund any credit.

Another option is a suica/credit card combo like the View Suica card, very hand.

My view Suica actually charges my mobile suica.

TokyoBoglehead,

Let me internalize what you are saying. Suppose, I have credit card A registered to Google Pay and the mobile Suica App in my handset. I have not charged anything yet to the card and so there is no money to pay my fare, yet. I am standing near train wickets. My fare is 830 yen, or say 1190 yen. I can just place my handset on where I should place it, and credit card A can directly be charged when i get out from the other end for the correct fare.

While returning, I can even pay via credit card B if it is now registered to Google pay for the correct fare, say 1190 yen?

Do I understand you correctly?

That wil be a bliss if correct.

Not exactly...

A. Your Mobile Suica is set to keep a minimum balance (example - 2000yen), and autocharge when it gets below that so this situation can never happen.

or

B. You did not set autocharge. You do not have enough funds, they gate rejects you and you need to charge with the app manually or at the ticket kiosk.

Obviously A is the preferred scenario, so most people setup autocharge. Mobile SUica seems to only 1 credit card at a time from what I can see.

....

If you are technophobic go with the Suica/view Credit card, It also has autocharge.

I use Rakuten Pay to charge my suica manually. I do this to double dip on Rakuten Points and nothing else.

Nothing wrong with this approach but check out the View card + Mobile Suica benefits. (View card is 500 yen a year).
