Why can they never make things simple?

Okay, so when you say make a new one from scratch, I assume I can do it with my current Rakuten account? As in I don’t need to make a new Rakuten account or a new card account right?

As adamu & TokyoBoglehead said, you have the Rakuten Card which is bound with the Rakuten Bank cash card. This is unfortunate as it is a restrictive variant. You cannot, for instance, apply for a family card for your wife with this 楽天銀行Credit Card. Nor can you apply for a second card or a non-JCB variant while you hold it.

As also per adamu's link, to get out of this situation you have to cancel the 楽天銀行 Credit Card, wait a few days, reapply for a new Rakuten Card, go through the credit review, then wait for the new card. So plan to be without a Rakuten Card for a few weeks if you go down this route.

The only other option I can suggest is to load the Rakuten Pay app on your phone, link the existing 楽天銀行Credit Card & keep it. This may mean you can pay at some of the shops you found that don't accept JCB.


Why do Rakuten do this? I wish they wouldn't. For others reading this: avoid the 楽天銀行 Credit Card

Obviously I kind of need that as it’s where I do all my primary banking.

btw have you requested a debit/cash card for your account?? if not you can definitely do it so you can access your money while waiting for a new credit card. I have 2 cards 1 credit and 1 debit. Btw let me know if applying for a rakuten card is smooth after the cancellation of your rakuten bank card.

No you cannot, as far as I understand. This is a bank/credit card hybrid with special rules. He needs to first cancel the Rakuten Bank Credit Card, and then apply for both a new bank cash card (looks like they have a Visa and Mastercard Debit options in addition to JCB), and a after a week or so, new Rakuten Credit Card (if wanted).

Good question. Maybe having a backup bank account or taking out a bunch of cash would be a good idea.

Well, now I'm confused. This page says you *can* apply for a debit card while holding the Rakuten Bank Credit Card:

So it seems like what Popochi suggested, and getting a Visa/Mastercard Debit card would be the first step. Maybe that's enough?
If not, then you can cancel the credit card, use your debit card in the mean time, then apply for a new Visa/Mastercard credit card a week later.
