Japanese ETFs with JP Interactive Brokers account

Post by ladeuve »

Hello everyone,

New to the forum and to investing. After some research I decided to go with Interactive Brokers as I'm sure how long I will stay in Japan, and also because I wanted to trade foreign stocks and ETFs. Unfortunately, IB JP doesn't accept applications for trading internationally and they said they didn't know when they'd resume accepting them, so for now I am stuck with only trading Japanese stocks.

I'd rather invest in ETFs though, but when I look up things like the Nikkei 500 and co., I get a message saying I don't have trading permission for these. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Are ETFs not tradeable in Japan? Or am I looking at foreign ETFs to trade in Japan? In the latter case, is there a list of Japanese ETFs that can be traded in Japan somewhere?

Thanks everyone!

I don't have experience with IB, but do you mean the information on this page is not accurate?

Thanks for the swift response.

Japan doesn't seem to appear in the Asia Pacific ETFs section... Guess you can't trade Japanese ETFs with a JP IB account :/

Thanks again.

IBKR is pausing new accounts as the renew their account offerings.

Previously -> They had 2 accounts levels, Japanese and International
Future -> They will offer a single account type.

Stay tuned.

I would open a Japanese brokerage for the meantime. You can always transfers your positions over, or sell and rebuy when IBKR opens up again to new clients.

One question regarding JP Interactive Brokers, Can they open an account Tokutei or is it Ippan only?
If Ippan only, the taxes need to be sorted out by yourself.

Currently, they are reworking account types. We do not know what accounts they will offer after their reworking.
