PayPay - Send Money Feature -> Highly Recommended!
Paypay took off during Covid, and everyone in a big/medium city probably has it installed if only to take advantage of the campaigns a year or so back.
The most overlooked feature is the send feature. I think it is one of the only apps in Japan that can let you send money peer-to-peer?
1. Add a contact with Mobile #, Display name or PayPay id.
2. Once added you can chat/send money extremely easily!
Sure beats the pants of furikomi. I believe the limit is 20万? But it is best used for splitting bills, gift planning, etc.
Everytime I mention it to a English speaking/Japanese PayPay user they had no idea it was an option. Makes life easier.

Our board favorite, Rakuten Pay, aped everything off Paypay so it can send P2P cash too. LinePay can as well.

Hmmmm go figure. I have Rakuten Pay and never saw that.
PayPay is the only app that "most" people seem to use in my experience. Even the somewhat techphobic.

I don't! Haven't bothered with any of the 'Pay's.TokyoBoglehead wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 6:41 am PayPay is the only app that "most" people seem to use in my experience. Even the somewhat techphobic.
My wife uses it though, so I think you are pretty much correct

I use PayPay a lot. The main reason is you'll find a lot of small shops accept only cash or PayPay. I'm not sure why, it may be because PayPay has zero or low fees for merchants, but I find that if a place accepts non-cash payments they usually accept PayPay. If card is an option I'll use Rakuten for the points, but PayPay is my fallback. You can add a visa card (not JCB, unfortunately) as your payment method so you can get your card points that way too and not have to worry about topping up PayPay with cash (via an ATM) or bank transfer. You won't get PayPay points though if you do that. A while ago they made the requirements for getting bonus points (up to 2% back I think) stricter, and unless you use it pretty much daily you're unlikely to get more than 0.5% - 1% back in points. So I prefer to use my Rakuten card now.
I've used the send money feature only once - to pay back a coworker for a bento! But it worked well and didn't have any fees.

I use Paypay with friends when eating out and we hit a restaurant that doesn't accept bill splitting (so pretty much any nice-r restaurant above a family restaurant/izakaya). Its very seamless but it requires you use paypay credit (that you load from a bank or ATM) and doesn't allow sending money from credit cards. Ditto for Rakuten, they require you to send Rakuten Cash.

This must be to prevent point farming and/or infinitely rotating credit between accounts?zeroshiki wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 11:49 pm I use Paypay with friends when eating out and we hit a restaurant that doesn't accept bill splitting (so pretty much any nice-r restaurant above a family restaurant/izakaya). Yeah, same reason you can't buy point cards with e-cash. To prevent abuse from people who try to game the system.TokyoBoglehead wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 12:48 amThis must be to prevent point farming and/or infinitely rotating credit between accounts?zeroshiki wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 11:49 pm I use Paypay with friends when eating out and we hit a restaurant that doesn't accept bill splitting (so pretty much any nice-r restaurant above a family restaurant/izakaya). You can charge Rakuten Cash by card, although I've never tried out the transfer feature. Want to send me some money to try it out?
