The USD change in the S&P500 is being masked by the continual weakening of the Yen Exchange Rate.

If the Yen moves weaker more than the S&P500 decreases, then the Yen value will increase despite the USD value decrease
If the Yen moves weaker less than the S&P500 decreases, then Yen value will decrease more than the USD value - the loss will be attenuated
If the Yen moves weaker and the S&P500 increases, then the Yen value will increase more than the USD value - the gain will be amplified

If the Yen moves stronger more than the S&P500 increases, then the Yen value will decrease despite the USD value increase
If the Yen moves stronger less than the S&P500 increases, then the Yen value will increase less than the USD value - the gain will be attenuated
If the Yen moves stronger and the S&P500 decreases, then the Yen value will decrease more than the USD value - the loss will be amplified
