When paying in cash, always pay down to the last yen if possible, even if you have don't have exact change, and get change in large coins or notes.
This. Plus you get the added amusement of spinning out the shop clerk!
¥863 and you hand over ¥1413 and the guy/girl looks at you as if you've gone mental... They then repeat ¥1413, twice, and as a question, "¥1413?" To which you say "Hai!" and motion for them to chuck it in the cash-register... Out spits ¥550 yen in two shiny coins and everyone around shouts and cheers in jubilation at your sheer mathematical magnificence!

Haha, I too enjoy this cheap thrill I bought a super-thin minimalist wallet a few years ago that has only has space for 999yen in coins max, so I always try to keep it very tight with the change. Of course, sometimes it all backfires with vending machines when they spit out 50 yen change in 10yen coins.

For example, if something is 536 yen, even if you don't have a 500 yen coin or enough 100 yens, give them 1036 yen and get 500 yen change. Or if you don't have a 5 yen or enough 1s, you can give them 1041 to get 505 back (two coins) instead of the 464 (10 coins) you'd get if you just hand over 1000 yen. Or even just pay 1001 yen to get 465 back and get rid of a 1 yen coin, instead of gaining one.
This is your version of sudoku or a crossword to keep your brain active as you get older, isn't it?

I've been doing like this for years.
The point is to have a coin purse with 2 compartments : 50/100/500 yen compartment
and 1/5/10 yen compartment.
This way, you can identify the coins by size and color pretty fast..
Found a great place to use coins. The City Office! Paid my city tax at the counter today with a big pile of 500 yen coins. They have a coin counting machine so it didn’t take long. No extra charge, no fuss, easy!

That's good to know.
I just got hit buy charges transferring money from my account to my sons, via the ATM 100yen each time. Not cheap when you're transferring often.
Anyway I was a little upset when I said if I take the cash out of the machine, then put the cash into my sons account it's free. and they agreed.
So the buggers are taking out fees transferring via ATM even to accounts in the same bank.
Not a happy banker.

unsolicited advice ahead:
SMBC has free intra-bank transfer. and its very convenient through their mobile app.
If you can switch things up, give it a try.
