Dumb question about Emaxis Slim S&P
Dumb question about Emaxis Slim S&P
I was just looking up the current downturn in that market, and I saw that the S&P 500 over one year is in the red at -3.15%. But when I check the emaxs slim S&P fund, it’s actually up 15.94% over the same year period. What causes the difference? Does the emaxis fund not track the full S&P index, and instead pick and choose the companies it includes?

Emaxis S&P 500 is Yen denominated. The Price is measured in yen.JimNasium wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 12:32 pm I was just looking up the current downturn in that market, and I saw that the S&P 500 over one year is in the red at -3.15%. What has happened to Yen/USD -> https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=JPY&to=USDYou buy in Yen. They take your Yen and exchanged it for USD and buy USD assets.
When you sell, they sell the USD assets and covert it to yen.
In short the holdings are in USD, USD has appreciated to the Yen. So that has increased its value in Yen terms.

With Rakuten, it is pretty easy to see this difference for individual US stocks as you can show the value and paper returns in USD and JPY.
For some of my stocks, the USD figure is - but the yen number is +. The difference is the currency.
I don't think they offer the same function for funds because, as someone said, eMaxis Slim are Japanese products denominated only in yen.

Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks everyone!

I'll just go on the record as calling the Bottom for the Yen. It's already turned. It's only going to get stronger from here.
Don't see any sign of 150 Yen to the Dollar...
And so that I can't be accused of hindsight, I'll just go on the record as calling the Bottom for the US Market in August 2022. It's going to continue down from here...
Hopefully the US Bottom will combine with a much stronger Yen to provide us with a once in a decade buying opportunity low price on the Emaxis Slim All Country and Emaxis Slim S&P in August / September 2022...
I may push that out a bit further, but it's still in the future...

Looking forward to the Tkydon Bottoms Up fund. I'll put a few man in if the fee is less than 1%.
