Thanks for the measured replies. Yes, I’m now seeing the risk and potential downsides of trying to time this sort of thing more clearly. After my original post yesterday I did a simulation on a spreadsheet which calculated potential profits/losses of waiting out a re-strengthening of the yen while imagining the S&P also strengthening to different degrees in the meantime. Long story short, even a best case scenario wouldn’t be that profitable. Especially when you consider the capital gains tax hit you take upon selling.

If it's your money that's being invested in her name, another thing to consider is that anything over 1.1M yen is subject to gift tax.

Reimbursements to a spouse for household expenses are not covered under gift tax, so it can be over 1.1 man depending on how you budget in your household.

But your point is definitely important!
