Charitable Donations - Ukraine

Post by LordFerret »

Does anyone know about making a charitable donation in Japan? I think you should be able to offset this against your tax bill. Has anyone done this and can offer advice on what is required? Does it need to be a Japanese charity or would any worldwide charity be okay?

Are there any charities based in Japan that are doing excellent work in the Ukraine? I would prefer to send money to operations that have a smaller profile rather than to the big names where a lot of the money disappears in administrative costs.

Thank you

It need to be an official Japan registered NGO I believe. The Ukrainian Embassy was looking for direct deposits, even crypto. That won`t cut it.

I suggest looking at Doctors Without Borders (JAPAN) or the Red Cross (Japan). I believe Rakuten also has a fund, but I am unsure if they have official status.

IF you do not see a specific notice in the QandA about a tax-deduction, assume you will not get one.

The Mrs and I donate regularly to Shanti. https://sva.or.jp/english/
No connection with Ukraine, their main focus is on improving educational opportunities in disadvantaged regions in SE Asia.
My take is that the overheads are low and most of your dollar gets used purposefully. They do issue a receipt that can be used for tax credit in your 年末調整 Or 確定申告

These two charities are tax deductible. They will send you some papers which you can use when submitting kakutei shinkoku.

1) ユニセフ:https://www.unicef.or.jp/kinkyu/ukraine/
ウクライナの子供たち、ご家族のために、医療、水と衛生、心理的ケア等に利用されます。

2) READY FOR:https://readyfor.jp/projects/aar_ukraine
ウクライナの家を追われた人々のために、食料・生活必需品の購入と配布等に利用されます。

I must warn you, though, that the owner of this forum might delete this thread because he "would rather avoid that kind of topic on the forum".

Doesn't seem to be the case at all...

I'm sure as long as things are apolitical it's fine.

This thread is asking about Japanese tax rules, so on topic for the forum.

So it was fine with you to post the list of charities as long as the topic is carefully worded to look like it has something to do with personal finances, but you preferred the blunt rejection when asked for permission to post the list of charities? Hmm...

Regardless, I'm glad that the topic of donations have eventually appeared here one way or another.

This Japanese site has a few options that are all eligible for the donation deduction on the tax return: https://kifunavi.jp/nonprofits/ukraine/

UN World Food Programme, Unicef, World Vision, Good Neighbours, Terra Renaissance.

It might just be me but if I were the admin this is the kind of post that would make me question if my efforts were worth it.

I donated to two big name charities last year. One sent me a tax receipt, the other didn't, so I just stuck the konbini receipts in my big book of tax deductibles and claimed and received the deduction anyway, no problems.

Ah, thank you for sharing this information. I've donated in the past for the same cause, but it's also true that if it's deductible, I can give more.
