Russia

Post by dogezenji »

With the latest announcement of sanctions, the Russian stock market / currency can be expected to drop significantly. Any thoughts on whether this might offer an opportunity, seeing that the long-term view on Russia (natural resources etc.) is probably not as negative as short-term sentiment will be over the next few weeks?

There is one Russia ETF traded on the TSE, and a few more overseas ones available via Rakuten Securities.

What are everyone's thoughts on this one?

Too hard for me.

Saw a news story that Russia is rejecting sell orders from overseas. If you can't trust the legal/regulatory regime you can't be sure of what you are buying (same for China).

Thank you. That is a very good point.

If you invest in emerging market funds though you definitely have at least some exposure to China.

Oh, sure. I thought you meant a concentrated bet on Russia.

Of course I own Russia and China already through global stock indexes. But I am not going out of my way to over- or under-weight them.

MSCI, FTSE Russell Remove ‘Uninvestable’ Russia From Key Indexes
Russia is now what MSCI calls a “Standalone Market.” MSCI Standalone Market Indexes are not included in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index or the MSCI Frontier Markets Index, which means that they miss out on billions of investment dollars that come through passive funds tracking those indexes. Countries currently in the Standalone category include Panama, Lebanon, Palestine, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

I think Russia is 0.3% of MSCI World Index, isn't it? Nothing to worry about.

Anyone who wants to speculatively invest in single Russian stocks or roubles or something...good luck to you
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

I do not think they can really. Trading has ceased on most ADRs.

The entire market now is basically RSX and ERUS, which have eliminated new share creation.
