Saw a few threads about private supplementary insurance but Mrs Woozy suggested joining this instead:
https://www.kyosai-cc.or.jp/sp/
Seems good to me because A) it's cheap, and B) it's not for profit
There's a variety of plans but the one I'm looking at is pay ¥2,000 per month and get ¥10,000 per day if you go into hospital for accident or illness, plus some other benefits too.
Sharing it here in case anyone (like me) didn't know about this scheme ... The Japanese obviously know about it because 21 million have joined
Also wondering if anyone who has more knowledge about it suggests not joining for any reason? Seems like a no-brainer, right? Especially for those of us who are no longer spring chickens so I guess increasingly likely to be hospitalised.
PS: having spent 4+months in hospital here myself I know that compared to most (all?) other countries the hospital stays here are crazily long so ¥10,000 per day could soon add up.

Re: Mutual aid
Looks pretty decent, for not much more per month than a few beers!
Something to bear in mind though (I translated using DeepL) :
Surgeries that are not eligible for payment
Surgeries that are not eligible for payment are as follows:
Surgeries with a reimbursement score of less than 1,400 points
Children's type is eligible for payment regardless of the number of points.
Wound treatment
Cleaning, stopping bleeding, and suturing of abrasions, cuts, lacerations, and puncture wounds
Skin incision
Debridement
A surgical procedure to remove infected or necrotic tissue and prevent it from affecting other tissues.
Non-biopsychiatric repair of bone or joint
Non-biopsychiatric restorative fixation and non-biopsychiatric mobilization
Restoration of a fracture or dislocation of a joint to its original state using the hands over the skin without using a scalpel.
Tooth extraction
Tooth extraction
So if you were to get stabbed and they stopped the bleeding and puncture wounds, you wouldn't get a payout!
"Wound treatment"?! So if you got bitten by a wild animal you wouldn't get a payout!

Re: Mutual aid
Yes, good point. Basically it looks like the cheap trivial stuff is excluded.

Non-biopsychiatric restorative fixation and non-biopsychiatric mobilization
Think something lost in translation here Wonder if it means things like knee and hip replacement aren't covered?
