Renewing "zairyu" card

Post by Roger Van Zant »

I am a PR holder.
My current "zairyu" card will expire in May.
Does anyone know where I go to do the renewal? Immigration? City hall?
It's my first time doing it since getting PR in 2015 (card is valid for seven years).

Is it a simple affair, or is it going to be tedious and drawn out?

Also, how long before it expires can you get it renewed? From one month before, for example?

Thanks!

Immigrations.

Simple, took maybe 5 min, but I'm not in tokyo, and had prefilled out the form.

They asked me to pull my mask down so they could briefly confirm the photo.

Here in Sendai took me about 5 minutes. Very painless.

Did this recently at immigration in Osaka. In and out in half an hour.

If you have all the documents ready, it is a very straighforward and painless process.
But please do look up in the website beforehand the documents you need (or call them to ask).

However, if you are going to the Tokyo Immigration Center, I strongly advise you to not go on the early morning.

My last time (in 2019) I went there early thinking I would finish everything quite quickly, but I arrived around 8am and there were already a hundred people lining up outside. (my 整理番号 when they opened the office was 111, I remember well).

So basically I waited outside for one hour, then waited inside for more one hour or so, and when it was my turn, everything was done in 5 minutes... :|

I believe that if you go just before lunch or sometime in the afternoon, the place will be mostly empty.

edit:
this is the website you should visit:

edit 2:
in fact, as a PR holder the informations are here:

Thanks everyone!
I live in the sticks, so it will be a small immigration office.
Glad to hear it shouldn't take too long.

Probably a silly question, but is it possible to renew online or by post? Our "local" immigration office is not so near.

You didn't download the new Zairyu app yet, RJ?
Version 1.sometimeinthedistantfuture is all voice controlled and just uses all the data the govt already has on you. Mine just updated itself automatically without me doing anything.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

In unrelated news. Last week I spent 10 minutes trying to photograph my IC embedded Mynumber card at precisely 45 degrees (not 44.99 or 45.01).
We are truly living in the future. Just a rather dank timeline.

I’m trying to open an SBI VC Trade account. Still eagerly waiting to hear their reasons to reject my application.
